Celebrating a Pioneering Energy Saving Initiative

The BIG Energy UpgradeOn Friday 21st March, Yorkshire Energy Services will join a multitude of sustainable energy professionals to celebrate one of the Yorkshire and Humber region’s most ground-breaking energy saving schemes.

From 2010 - 2014, the BIG Energy Upgrade programme achieved a reduction of over 50,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions through the implementation of efficient energy saving home improvements.

It not only helped renovate hundreds of homes in areas of Kirklees, Leeds, Doncaster, Barnsley, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire, but created a multitude of jobs and helped stimulate the local supply chain.

Part financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme 2007 - 2013, the BIG Energy Upgrade supported several of the country’s most vulnerable and fuel poor communities by funding critical home efficiency measures such as solid wall insulation.

The programme, which was delivered by a consortium of diverse organisations including Local Authorities, Housing Associations and the University of Sheffield, was the first of its kind to adopt an innovative ‘whole house, whole community’ approach to energy efficiency.

Yorkshire Energy Services’ involvement in the programme was far reaching. The company’s outreach team helped influence the uptake of installations by engaging householders over the doorstep and discussing the wider benefits of energy efficiency. Senior managers helped source additional funding to broaden the reach of several of the scheme’s local initiatives. Yorkshire Energy Services also helped raise brand awareness through a coordinated marketing campaign which was well received by the project’s partners, local residents and the region’s media.

The European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013 is managed through the Department for Communities and Local Government and was one of the funds established by the European Commission to help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which support local businesses and create jobs. The BIG Energy Upgrade celebration event will be held at Halifax Hall in Sheffield on Friday 21st March to mark the scheme’s success stories, learning outcomes and impact on the regional economy.
